This week’s Food is the New Rock (#106) is a special…

OUTSIDE LANDS SPECTACULAR

Thanks to makemusicsocial and UE Boom, we spent the weekend at the San Francisco festival eating, feeding bands, and podcasting and here is the fruit of all that labor. Zach and our good friend Jeff Miller (from Thrillist LA) talked to Ryan and Andrew from Grouplove, Stella from Warpaint, and Chefs Naomi Pomeroy (from BEAST in Portland) and Kris Morningstar (from The Gorbals in Los Angeles) who they ran into during Haim’s set on the main stage. The three conversations, which took place backstage at the festival, have been combined into one podcast spectacular for your listening pleasure!

This week’s podcast is OG food/music pioneer…

LISA LOEB

Most people remember Lisa from her song “Stay” on the Reality Bites soundtrack. But those of us who are into food just as much as we’re into music remember her from her show on the Food Network with Dweezil Zappa. Since then she’s made more music, started her own eyeglasses line (of course), and released a series of children’s books and CDs. And, naturally, she still obsesses about food. We talk to her about her favorite restaurants in New York, L.A., Providence and Boston, plus she brought us doughnut cupcakes, and we brought her homemade almond butter and Chez Pim jam. And at the end of the podcast Lisa tells us about the benefit that happened in Vegas for Chef Kerry Simon in February, who was recently diagnosed with MSA. (You can get more details about how you can help fight the disease at https://www.keepmemoryalive.org/)

This week’s podcast guest is folk-pop singer/songwriter

BRETT DENNEN

who’s big into superfoods.  We also talk gargling with coconut oil, vegan chocolate, and sushi recommendations (he does eat fish). There’s also the wilderness survival section of the program where we talk about foraging for shitberries and salsa bird droppings.

Food is like the new rock and roll, the really dangerous people are cooks like Nigella. Us pop stars are lightweights.
