How the fuck do you make curry in 30 minutes? You want the curry to taste like an Arcade Fire song; lots of layers, orchestral. Unfortunately it’s going to sound like 14 guys all playing guitar solos.

Three weeks ago, Mr. Puck unveiled an entirely reinvented Spago Beverly Hills, with a décor he describes as “edgy,” a soundtrack of Arcade Fire and Spoon, and a menu sprinkled with adventurous small-plate offerings that have some of his bluer-hair customers wincing.
Edgy indeed!

All the talk of Arcade Fire signing to Merge Records because of food (spawned by the episode of our podcast w/ Mac McCaughan) caused me to stumble onto this old Arcade Fire video.

Lesson?  Don’t eat a ton of Ethiopian food before you have to go on stage.

Have you listened to the latest episode of our podcast, featuring Mac McCaughan?  Most people know Mac as the guitarist of Superchunk and co-founder of Merge Records.  But did you know he’s also married to Andrea Reusing, James Beard award winning chef of Lantern in Chapel Hill, NC.  Have you been there?  Because Arcade Fire has been, and according to Mac the band credits the restaurant as one of the reasons they signed with Merge.  He also talks about getting restaurant recs from Yo La Tengo and Fugazi.

Don’t have time to listen to it now?  Download it from iTunes for later.

Food is the New Rock Episode 3: Mac McCaughan

Most people know Mac McCaughan as the guitarist from Superchunk, or as one of the co-founders of Merge Records, home to Arcade Fire, Spoon, She & Him, Neutral Milk Hotel, M Ward and more.  But did you also know that he is married to a James Beard award winning chef, and one of the guys from Arcade Fire says her restaurant is the reason the band signed to Merge?

He tells us all about it (and more) in Episode 3 of the podcast, now available for download on iTunes or Soundcloud

  • Social Distortion - Story of My Life
  • Etta James - You Can Leave Your Hat On
  • Howlin’ Wolf - Back Door Man
